Mercury-Free Fillings

A filling is used in restorative dentistry to repair small tooth fractures, decay, or minimal damage to the surface of teeth. At Highland Dental Group we use mercury-free materials such as porcelain, in addition to silver amalgam in our treatments. These fillers are used to even out tooth surfaces for better biting and chewing.

Enamel (the hard white shiny substance which forms the covering of your tooth) loss is a common component of tooth decay, and can leave one with tooth sensitivity. In many cases, this sensitivity is significantly alleviated or completely eliminated once a dental filling has been placed. In some cases, depending on the extent of tooth decay or damage, the affected tooth may require additional or alternative procedures.

Most of us have had amalgam fillings (silver or mercury) or gold fillings. These used to be called mercury fillings, as some amalgam fillings contained mercury. Metal fillings were effective, but very conspicuous and tended to blacken in color over time. Composite resin dental fillings were created as an alternative to this. Colored to look like a natural tooth they are known as Composite Resin Dental Fillings and are made of a plastic resin. Proven to be durable, they also give you a very natural looking smile.

If you have a cavity in a tooth or have broken, mercury, or amalgam fillings, this option is well worth discussing with one of our dentists. Mercury or amalgam fillings can easily be removed and replaced with the far more attractive natural colored types. These natural looking Composite Resin Dental Fillings strengthen teeth beyond the level they had with the original fillings.

Inlays and Onlays

When more than half of a molar’s biting surface needs treatment, an inlay or onlay may be a better solution than a filling. These options are available when more than a filling is needed but a crown is not. Inlays and onlays are placed on the grinding surface of  molars (the teeth that works to grind and chew food). At Highland Dental group we offer a choice of either ceramic or gold.
