Few places embrace the arrival of fall quite like our very own town, Salem, Massachusetts. With crisp autumn weather, historic streets, colorful foliage & a calendar packed with seasonal activities on the horizon, Salem is preparing for another busy fall in 2026. This year is especially significant as the city celebrates its 400th anniversary, adding an extra layer of history and special programming to the season.
Haunted Happenings Returns in October
The centerpiece of Salem’s fall calendar is Salem Haunted Happenings, the city’s month-long Halloween celebration running throughout October. The festivities officially begin October 1 with the Haunted Happenings Grand Parade, which starts at Shetland Park, travels through downtown & finishes at Salem Common.
October 2026 offers something for nearly every type of visitor. The Haunted Biz Baz Street Fair on October 3rd & 4th will bring more than 80 vendors to Salem Common selling handmade art, jewelry, clothing, crafts & Halloween-themed merchandise.
Families can also enjoy the Zombie Walk on October 3, while the Howl-o-ween Pet Parade on October 10th gives four-legged visitors their opportunity to get into the Halloween spirit.
Unique Fall Events
Salem’s fall calendar extends well beyond traditional Halloween attractions. On October 9th, Lanterns in the Woods invites visitors to stroll through Salem Woods surrounded by glowing jack-o-lanterns while listening to spooky stories.
October 10th brings the Halloween Boat Parade to Salem Harbor, where decorated boats and costumed crews will make their way alongside Derby Wharf.
One of the most unusual events of the season takes place on October 17th: Witch Hats on the Wharf. In honor of Salem’s 400th anniversary, participants are invited to wear their favorite witch hats for a community photo and an attempt to make history with hundreds of participants gathered along the waterfront.
Families should also look for Kids’ Fun Fest, scheduled for multiple October weekends at Salem Common.
History, Theater and Shopping
Fall visitors who prefer history and culture to scares will have plenty of choices. Performances of Becky Nurse of Salem by Sarah Ruhl are scheduled during October, while Haunted Fables at The Gables brings stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe to The House of the Seven Gables.
The Salem Night Faire also returns on select October evenings, featuring vendors, performers, food, hot cider & seasonal entertainment.
And, of course, visitors can explore Salem’s historic attractions, including: The House of the Seven Gables and The Witch House at Salem, while enjoying the city’s beautiful waterfront and autumn atmosphere.
