National Brush Day is November 1st!
Did you know that November 1st is National Brush Day? Did you also know that eating sweets is the number one contributor to tooth decay? It’s important that we take the time to remind the children in our lives about the importance of taking care of their teeth, especially after loading up on sugary treats during Halloween and throughout the month of October. National Brush Day is an annual campaign that helps focus on children’s oral health through facts about brushing, activities to make brushing fun, and tips to keeping teeth nice and healthy.
Together, let’s show kids that brushing doesn’t have to be viewed as a chore. Here’s a look at a few National Brush Day activities that you can encourage your children to incorporate into their regular brushing routines:
Pick out a tooth brushing song
Ask your child to choose their favorite song and then pump up the volume! Dance along while brushing and make it somewhat of a party!
Brush up on your brushing
Get back to the basics and review proper brushing techniques with your children. Remind them to brush their gum line gently, and to brush all the way to the back of their mouths. Finally, ensure they know to brush for a full two minutes and to brush their tongues, too!
Make a family brushing competition
Create a chart for your family to track how well everyone is brushing. Each day, have your child log how long they brushed their teeth. Then, come up with a reward for the family member that does the best!
How about trying out a different toothpaste flavor to spice up brushing times? Here are a few unique flavors that you may or may not want to try:
Bacon: Sure, there is a large population of people who love to indulge in bacon for breakfast or in sandwiches, so Mr. Bacon created a toothpaste for the days when you don’t have time to make it.
Chocolate: Surprisingly, chocolate toothpaste is actually safe for your teeth as it boasts non-toxic properties. Some versions even come in a candy-wrapper bottle!
Wasabi: If you’re bored of your toothpaste routine, take it to the next level with spicy wasabi toothpaste. Do note: this product may not be for the faint of heart!
Here are a few reasons why we enjoy National Brush Day:
Brushing is fun!
It’s important to brush for a full two minutes in order to keep our teeth healthy. There are a lot of ways to make brushing more entertaining. You can use a funny video or a tooth brushing dance to help distract your kids while they’re brushing!
You can get creative with your toothbrush!
There are three main categories of toothbrush: manual, electric and sonic. Moreover, within these categories, there are seemingly endless choices in regard to color, size and features. For example, some toothbrushes have a gum cleaner on the back of the brush head, while others even feature your kid’s favorite cartoon. Let your child get creative and encourage them to pick out a toothbrush that makes them smile!
Brushing can be a fun family event!
Brushing is a routine that your family can engage in together everyday. It’s critical that we show our kids why brushing is necessary and how doing it as a team can help them to understand its importance. Bonus points for flossing together, too!
