October Is National Dental Hygiene Month
October may be best known for pumpkins, colorful leaves & Halloween candy, but there is another reason to celebrate this month: National Dental Hygiene Month! October is the perfect time to shine a spotlight on the importance of good oral hygiene and the dental professionals who help keep our smiles healthy.
While brushing and flossing are habits we practice everyday, National Dental Hygiene Month gives us an opportunity to step back and think about how our everyday choices affect our teeth, gums & overall oral health.
Why Dental Hygiene Matters
Your mouth is home to millions of bacteria (lovely thought, right?). Some are harmless, while others can contribute to plaque buildup, cavities, gum disease & bad breath. When plaque isn’t removed regularly, it can harden into tartar, which cannot be removed effectively with a toothbrush alone.
That is where your dental hygienist plays an important role. During a professional cleaning, a hygienist removes plaque and tartar from areas that can be difficult to clean at home. Your hygienist can also look for signs of gum inflammation and other oral-health concerns and provide personalized recommendations for keeping your mouth healthy between visits.
The Basics Still Matter
Good dental hygiene doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, some of the most effective habits are the simplest:
- Brush twice a day: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Spend about two minutes brushing, making sure you reach the front, back & chewing surfaces of your teeth.
- Clean between your teeth every day: Floss, use interdental brushes or choose another method recommended by your dental professional. Your toothbrush can’t effectively clean all the spaces between your teeth.
- Drink plenty of water: Water helps rinse away food particles and can be especially helpful after meals and snacks.
- Be mindful of sugary foods and drinks: You don’t have to eliminate your favorite treats, but limiting how frequently your teeth are exposed to sugar can help reduce the risk of cavities.
- Don’t skip your dental appointments: Regular professional cleanings and examinations allow your dental team to monitor your oral health and identify potential problems early.
Your Mouth Is Connected to the Rest of You
Taking care of your mouth is an important part of taking care of your overall health. Healthy teeth and gums can make it easier to eat, speak, smile & go about your everyday life comfortably.
Your dental hygienist is also an important part of your dental care team. Beyond cleaning your teeth, hygienists educate patients, answer questions, demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques & help patients develop habits they can maintain at home.
Make October Your Oral-Health Reset
National Dental Hygiene Month is a great reminder that you don’t have to wait for a problem to start taking better care of your smile. Maybe it’s time to replace an old toothbrush, improve your flossing routine, drink more water or schedule that dental appointment you’ve been putting off.
This October, give your smile a little extra attention. Brush, clean between your teeth, make healthy choices & visit your dental team regularly.
After all, a healthy smile isn’t just something to celebrate in October; it’s something worth protecting every day of the year!
