Preparing Your Back-to-School Dental Routine (Part 2)
We’re back with part two in our preparing your back-to-school dental routine series. Part of this transition is about building confidence and maintaining your well-being, and this includes dental health. Here are some tips to help solidify a dental health strategy for high school students and higher education students as we approach back-to-school season!
High School Students
As they grow older, teenagers face unique dental challenges, but there are many ways to help them keep their smiles healthy:
- Wisdom Teeth: Generally speaking, high school is often when wisdom teeth start to emerge. Regular dental visits can monitor their development and detect or address any issues early.
- Avoid Tobacco: Public education health curriculums often address this issue, but it’s important to talk to your teen about the dangers of tobacco use at home, too. This includes its detrimental effects on oral health, like tooth staining and gum disease.
- Oral Hygiene: It’s important to continue to reinforce the importance of brushing and flossing. By this point, teenagers are usually happily and fully flexing their independence muscles, which may result in becoming lax or lazy with their oral health routines, so regular reminders don’t hurt!
- Cosmetic Concerns: This is the point in life where appearance often starts to take center stage. Encourage your teens to discuss cosmetic concerns like teeth whitening with their dentist rather than using an over-the-counter, stain-removing product.
- Mouthguard Usage: Similarly to middle school-aged children, it’s imperative to reiterate the importance of mouthguard usage, especially if your child plays contact sports. This is an easy way to help prevent dental injuries and dental emergencies.
Higher Education Students
If you’re an adult returning to school or taking evening classes, chances are, your schedule is supremely busy. This may pose new challenges that might include maintaining the integrity of your regular oral health care routine. Here are some tips for how you can manage these changes:
- Time Management: Make the effort to plan out your day in advance. Schedule specific times for brushing and flossing, so that you don’t lose sight of one of the most important routines in your life.
- Stress Management: Adding something new and time-consuming onto your plate can be a stressor. It’s common for stress to lead to habits like teeth grinding. Consider using a mouthguard at night, if needed, and practice stress-reducing techniques to relax your jaw.
- Healthy Diet: Maintain a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support your dental health. Although often easy and convenient, try to avoid excessive coffee/caffeine and sugary snacks.
- Regular Check-Ups: Make your dental appointments a priority. Regular visits are crucial to prevent oral health issues and to treat them early.
- Oral Hygiene Tools: It might be time to make the investment into an electric toothbrush and water flosser for more efficient cleaning, especially if time becomes a major constraint.
Dental health plays a significant role in overall well-being and confidence. By incorporating these tips into your own or your child’s back-to-school routine, you’re paving the way to healthier and brighter smiles.
